Gold hallmarks: how to check a piece before paying
A hallmark is a small mark stamped on a piece. It shows the fineness of the metal and, in some cases, the maker or the testing office.
Where to find it
It is often inside a ring, on the clasp of a necklace or bracelet, or on the post of an earring. It is very small: a magnifying glass helps.
What the numbers say
A number such as 750 means 750 parts per thousand of pure gold, which is 18 carat. 375 is 9 carat and 916 is 22 carat. Marks and symbols vary by country and period: a symbol cannot be guessed.
If in doubt
A mark can be worn, missing or imitated: the hallmark alone does not prove everything. Before paying a large amount, have the piece checked by a jeweller or the assay office.
Also ask for an invoice showing the weight, carat and price.
