Gold price and jeweller's price: why are there two different prices?
In Tunisia, the price per gram quoted by a jeweller is often clearly higher than the gold price converted into dinars. That is not necessarily unusual: the two figures do not measure the same thing.
The gold price: the metal alone
The world price is quoted in dollars per ounce of pure gold (one ounce is 31.1 grams). Converted into dinars and adjusted for carat, it gives the value of the metal alone. This is the reference lor.tn shows each day: it is for comparison, not for setting the price of a piece.
The shop price: the metal and the rest
A finished piece adds workmanship, any stones, testing, the shop's costs and its margin to the metal. The finer or more detailed the design, the more this part weighs in the price.
For a set piece, the price depends mainly on the stones: the weight of gold is no longer enough to value it.
How to compare two pieces
Divide the price by the weight to get a price per gram, at the same carat and for pieces without stones. Compare this figure with today's price: the gap is the workmanship and margin.
A price far below the value of the gold should alert you: it may be an old price or a mistake. Always confirm with the shop.
